Driven by the many complaints regarding the tax on shipping goods to the country, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic, the Hong Kong Indonesian Migrant Workers Union (SBMI) held a tax socialization via video conference, Sunday (26/4/2020).

In the online discussion, there were two speakers from the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) in Hong Kong, namely Buhari Sirait, Customs Technical Attache and Agung Wahyudi, Police Technical Attache.

According to the chairman of the Hong Kong SBMI, Nur Halimah, the SBMI will always campaign for customs and excise issues to Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) both through online media and face-to-face meetings.

“We will always inform our friends about customs regulations, for example in WhatsApp groups, Facebook, meet in person, besides we also socialize through the Hong Kong SBMI fanpage,” said Nur Halimah, Thursday (4/30/2020).

One of the PMIs who had sent goods to their homeland, Vita Rimala, a migrant worker from Ponorogo admitted that she was charged a tax fee of Rp. 350,000 when sending 2 boxes of masks through the post office.

“I got Rp. 350,000 in Indonesia, only sent two boxes of masks. I sent it through the post office,” said Vita, PMI who has worked in Hong Kong for 12 years, Thursday (4/30/2020)

The one-hour discussion was attended by 15 participants from several organizational representatives, including the Hong Kong SBMI, the Hong Kong People’s Struggle Post (Pospera), the National Alliance for Indonesia (Aku Indonesia), the International Domestic Workers Federation (IDWF) as well as individual participants. .

During the Covid-19 epidemic, the Hong Kong SBMI has received more than ten complaints regarding customs cases from PMIs.
