Dozens of spectators came to watch and discuss the documentary film entitled “The Price of Justice” at the Wang Gungwu Lecture Hall, HK University on Sunday (18/4). This documentary tells the dark story of migrant domestic workers (PRT) in Hong Kong to demand and seek justice.

The film, produced by Rights Exposure in collaboration with the Federation of Asian Domestic Workers Unions (FADWU) and with the support of the International Labor Organization’s ‘Fair Recruitment’ program and Oxfam Hong Kong, is shot by following four migrant domestic workers from the Philippines as they seek or access justice for redress. loss from his former employer in Hong Kong to return to his hometown.

This 55-minute film in English and Tagalog reveals what challenges migrant domestic workers (PRT) face in filing cases against former employers for wrongful or illegal dismissals that are often linked to long-term illness or pregnancy, salary unpaid, and physical abuse.

In the documentary, it is shown how each of the women in the story had to go through a very complex government bureaucracy, spending hours sitting in waiting rooms and facing court proceedings that were frustrating and often took months, even years. .

According to available data, thousands of migrant domestic workers choose to give up and go home empty-handed, are forced to receive far less compensation than they deserve, or have never filed a complaint in their case. Many of the migrant domestic workers who have filed cases are also in limbo, have to live in charitable shelters and are not allowed to work while waiting for the resolution of protracted court cases.

According to FADWU, few migrant domestic workers get what they are entitled to because of the government’s emphasis on ‘conciliation’. Employers also recognize that the longer the process takes the more likely workers will give up, and offer lower amounts in an effort to get them to accept it as it is rather than having to face a longer and complicated process.
