Palestinians in the Gaza Strip will commemorate one year of the Great March of Return demonstrations on Saturday (30/3/2019) tomorrow.

Not only in the Gaza Strip, the commemorative action will also be carried out by Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

It is estimated that 10,000 people will attend the commemoration event. The Egyptian-brokered talks took place in the Gaza Strip for several hours.

To avoid violence and casualties, Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, said it had reached an agreement with Israel brokered by Egypt.

“Egypt told us they (Israel) promised to be lenient,” said a Hamas official who asked not to be named, as reported by  AFP on Friday (29/3).

Quoted from CNN, Hamas said it asked the protesters to be within a few hundred meters of the border fence. Instead, Israeli officials are expected not to open fire at demonstrations.

There are fears that the warning could turn into riots, given that since the beginning of this week Israel has been bombarding a number of points in the Gaza Strip. They reasoned to reply to the rocket attacks carried out by Hamas. However, Hamas denied they carried out rocket attacks on Israel.

Hamas has promised to temporarily halt attacks in the West Bank. Another agreement is to allow the amount of aid from Qatar to the Gaza Strip more. However, Israel has not responded to this deal.

The Return to Homeland Movement began on March 30, 2018. The action turned from a peaceful demonstration to a violent one.

It is recorded that 258 Palestinians died as a result of being killed by Israeli forces during demonstrations in 2018. Meanwhile, the Israeli side lost two soldiers.
