The Labor Tribunal ruled that the employer must compensate Baby Jane Allas, a Filipino migrant worker, in the amount of HKD 30,000. Monday, (15/4/2019).
This amount includes medical expenses and compensation for one month notice, as it is known that Baby Jane was fired by her employer in February following a diagnosis a month earlier which stated that the migrant worker had stage three cervical cancer.
Not only that, the Tribunal also asked Baby Jane’s employer to re-employ her so that she can get access to treatment at the Hong Kong General Hospital. As previously reported by HKFP, Baby Jane’s former employer and lawyer have offered an amicable option. However, the victim considered the offer unfair.
Baby Jane’s employer, who did not attend the verdict today, is known to be a well-known public figure. Jamil Bushra is the former Chairman of the United Muslim Association of Hong Kong. This Pakistani national is also seen frequently taking selfies with Hong Kong officials and Chief Executive Carrie Lam.
The popularity of the Baby Jane case garnered public sympathy and attention, even the GoGetFunding page created by the employer of Baby Jane’s sister managed to collect donations of more than $400,000 last month.
