The Center for Food Safety (CFS) of the Department of Food and Environmental Hygiene urges the public not to consume packaged fruit and nuts imported from the UK (UK), because it may be contaminated with salmonella bacteria which is the cause of various infections; such as diarrhea, food poisoning, to typhoid fever, Tuesday (25/8/2020).

Traders should also immediately stop using or selling the product in question if they own it. Product details are as follows:

“CFS, through its Food Incident Surveillance System takes note of a notice issued by the UK Food Standards Agency, that the manufacturer of the product is recalling the above-mentioned group of products that may be contaminated with Salmonella.” explained a CFS spokesperson.

Upon learning of the incident, CFS immediately followed up with major local importers and retailers. Initial investigations found that the above-mentioned importers had imported the above batches of products and some of them had been sold. Following notification by the manufacturer in the UK the relevant importer has stopped selling the potentially contaminated product and has started a recall. Members of the public may call the importer’s hotline at 2890 7265 during business hours for inquiries about recalls.

“Salmonella infection can cause fever and digestive disorders such as vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea. The effects on infants, young children, the elderly and patients with weakened immune systems can be more severe and can even lead to death,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson urged consumers not to consume the contaminated product if they think they have purchased it. Traders are also asked to immediately stop using or selling the product in question if they have it.

CFS will alert the merchant about the incident, it is currently still following up and taking appropriate action if necessary, as the investigation is ongoing.
